Chrystopher “Picassoul” Burns

Enter the Circle City, 2023

Mixed media

Welcome to Indianapolis, known to many as “The Circle City” and the home of the Indy 500, the Indianapolis Colts and the Indiana Pacers! Burns created this colorful, abstract, mixed media piece that highlights downtown and the monument circle, as well as the wonderful sporting events and the diverse people and fans that visit and attend them. “The use of circles is used to emphasize my theme, and the street made of red bricks, as well as the jets flying by, pay homage to the Indianapolis 500 itself.”

Chrystopher Burns was born and raised in Indianapolis, IN. By day he is a Middle School Life Skills Instructor, but his real passion is visual arts of all types. Always looked at as a creative, his knack for art and design, eventually turned to fashion and in the early 90’s, he started a local clothing line, “Poogie Wear”, where he experienced minimal success, designing and painting jean wear for the locals. Several years ago, he began to take his love and talent for art more seriously, and with encouragement from his students, family and friends, sought out opportunities to showcase his artwork. Now, under the artistic moniker “Picassoul”, Burns considers himself an Urban Abstract Artist. He is known for his use of bright colors and black outlines to portray everyday scenarios, as well as whimsical subject matter.Like many artists, he looks for and appreciates any venue that allows him to show his work to the public and has shown his artwork at several galleries and events throughout Indianapolis and the Midwest. He believes, “As artists, we have the power and the ability to combat the ugly and negative that we see in the world with beauty and color.”
